Source: TimesOnline The balance of power in divorces tilted away from wives yesterday as a judge warned that ex-husbands could not be expected to provide women with a share of future earnings for life. England’s reputation as the most female-friendly place for divorce was dented when a wife who did not have a job was refused £1.5 million compensation for loss of her banker husband’s future pay. Mr Justice Charles said in the High Court that anyone given an adequate lump sum could not expect a share of future earnings. |

Falling in love is free but falling out of love can be very costly, according to US business magazine Forbes' list of most expensive celebrity divorces.
Topping the pile of record payouts were US basketball star Michael Jordan and singer-songwriter Neil Diamond, with estimated $150m (£75.5m) settlements.

Whitney Houston has been given custody of the teenage daughter she shares with estranged husband Bobby Brown, as their 14-year marriage comes to an end.
The singer, 43, told a Californian court that Brown was "unreliable" and their daughter could not depend on him. A lawyer for Bobby Brown, 38, said he would appeal the judge's decision. The pair's tempestuous marriage was marred by prison sentences for Brown and stints in drug rehabilitation clinics for Houston.

New pension laws coming into effect in Japan could lead to an explosion in divorces, some experts are warning.
The rules will make it easier for wives to claim up to half their husband's pension once the marriage is over.
The number of divorces in Japan has been rising for several decades, but the trend reversed four years ago when the new laws were first discussed. Many believe that wives in unhappy marriages have been waiting for the new laws to come into effect on Sunday.
