Keeping Things CalmPosted by TryingMyBest in children |
Aren't children extraordinary? They never cease to amaze. Get this...
My kids are big fans of Mario and Sonic Olympics on the Nintendo Wii (and Wii Sports and others). It's amazing because through this they are now both really interested in all things Olympics and all things sports. For recent birthdays I've got all the kids to take part in our own version of the Olympics in the park, and awarded little replica plastic medals and trophys to all contenders in a fun filled crazy selection of minature sporting contests. I could elaborate, but that's not the point. The thing is, we've got loads of little medals and trophies in the house which the kids love to play with and award each other etc.
So this morning, my older one (6) finds one of these medals. He comes up to me and asks me to bend down so he can put it round me. 'You get the gold medal for being the best dad, and for keeping everything calm'. He says.
Honestly, I was swallowing back the tears as he said this to me with a cheerful loving smile on his gorgous little face. I guess he realises that his mum tries to bate me, and tries to order me around, and he must see that I just don't rise to it, and avoid any kind of conflict completely. I guess he clocks it when I very politely leave a room, and make sure that the argument which is brewing in the air is just made to dissipate into nothing. All I could do was hug him, and tell him that I loved him so much and that he made me the proudest dad in the world.
