Hi there,
I am wondering whether it would be possible to have a
new category specifically dealing with the issues of a divorce where one
partner is either living or working overseas?
It seems to me
that there are more people finding themselves in this situation recently
with posts about REMO, SM and CM realting to countries in and out of the
EU.
There are particular issues apart from financial that are
specific to international divorce - access, communication, property and
relationships with children.
I think that such a forum would
benefit those who are both respondents and applicants in divorce and enable
them to easily find those in a similar situation and provide peer support.
For those who are overseas without easy access to advice and support in the
UK, it could provide a lifeline and help defuse tensions in an already
difficult situation. Being overseas can be very isolating, particularly if
working overseas in an inhospitable or 'difficult' location.
Such a forum could also highlight professionals who specialise or have
expertise in this area of law as well as other professionals who are able
to provide support and advice.
As far as I am aware there is no
support group like this in existence on the internet apart from the
occasional article or thread on expat forums which deal with 'trailing
spouses' or whole families who are abroad. Divorce among expats is
particularly high, but it is not obvious where to find help or support.
I find myself in this situation although I am in the UK with the
chidlren and stbx is opverseas. I have experience of working and living
overseas as an expat family and am well aware of the unique pressures and
difficulties that can be encountered. I am also conscious of the
insecurity and doubt when dealing with an expat spouse who has threatened
to 'disappear' with all assets unless I comply with what he wants! He
lives in a culture where the majority of his colleagues are divorced or
divorcing but cannot find a way to solve their relationship problems!
What do you think?
