Re:Solicitor Will Not Tell Me What\'s Happening

I last heard from my solicitor on 14 January telling me that my husband would have received the court papers. Since then I haven't heard a dicky bird. I rang them the week before last and was told by the assistant that my solictor was extremely busy (the other partner was on leave) but would ring me the following week. Didn't happen. I have phoned again today to try and find out what's happening to which the assistant has said that she will try again to get my solicitor to ring me.

Is this normal?

Normal? What's that then?

YOU are paying your solicitor. A kings ransom per second no doubt.

YOU call the shots.

If you owe them money, tell them if they haven't contacted you within 48 hrs that you will assume that they no longer wish to act for you and that you will not expect a bill from them and that you will take your business elsewhere. Reckon that would elicit a pretty speedy response.

If you don't owe them money, ring and tell his secretary that you need an update on matter and 6 weeks is long enough.

It is apparently par for the course for many albeit rather disbelieved by the good sols and those receiving the services of good sols.

That you are being told they are "busy" , not returning your calls and not updating you regards YOUR life speaks volumes.

IMHO keeping all correspondence in writing provides a papertrail and a better response. If they are too busy to take your call, they will be too busy to prepare your case in your best interests...but they will not be too busy to invoice you! Call me a cynic, but this is ­base­d on my experiences and fact!

I haven't begun the divorce procedure yet, and my only experience of solicitors is sorting out my uncle's estate after he died without making a Will and buying two houses and selling one.

All I can say is that they do NOTHING unless you chase them. In the first house purchase they only got going when we threatened to pull out of the sale. Interestingly our sol told us it was our seller's sol holding things up and the seller was told that it was our sol. Actually I suspect both our sols were having a jolly time on the golf course and not bothered.
