Reasons for Infidelity

Just read this in a magazine. What do you think wikis?

According to psychiatrist Frank Pittman in his book ' Grow up - How taking responsibility can make you a happy adult.''

There are four types of infidelity.

1) Accidental infidelity - a fleeting or one off occasion

2) The romantic affair - you meet someone wonderful while going through a crisis in your life.

3) The marital arrangement - comfort while in a marriage that wont die and wont recover.

4) The philanderer- men who need their masculinity affirmed or woman who are the daughters or ex wife's of philanderers.

The article goes on to say that research shows that if a couple haven't converted their affair into a commitment within two months, they never will.

I think the last sentence, about two months, is interesting. I think I've heard that, in dating, three months is a pretty important crunch point, so this does kind of make sense.

Accidental infidelity? I don't get that, i.e. 'whoops, my trousers just fell down!' That's patently nonsense.

In my own case, I think my ex wife/philanderer had some kind of romantic affair, but as to whether this was connected to a crisis... I'm not sure.

I think there's so much more to it than these four categories and I'm not convinced by them, i.e. people can be sociopaths and hide it, people can have problems with empathy and understanding other people's perspectives which then leads to doing stuff which, ultimately, leads to their undoing.

I'm of the opinion that, fundamentally, there is no excuse for having an extra marital affair.

No idea which one I'd class the x's affair as, seeing as she lived half way round the world. Couldn't care less anyway now.

The above is the biggest load of bollocks i have read in a very long time.

Tell me has this Frank Pittman every felt the devastation caused by adultery? Mmmmmmmmm I think not!!!!!!

How can you label the breaking of another person's heart, is it something our X's bought in a tin on the supermarket shelf? "Ohh now let's see, this is Sunday so what shall I go for today, a romantic affair or an accidental infidelity? Well what about the one that will cause the most pain!".

Adultery is adultery, however you package it up!

Dukey, I totally agree it is a pile of crap! And JJ as we have all said so many times on Wiki, there is no excuse for adultery, none whatsoever.

Gosh this has made my blood boil, but thank you jaymdee for highlighting this article. Our society is now so disposable that there is now bottled adultery on sale in every supermarket, down every high street, in every town and to hell with the consequences of how it affects us all!

Personally I think the article should have read the four main categories of excuses that have been given as reasons why they have been unfaithful.

My partners ex reason was number one: it was an accident they didnt mean to do it!!
