Moving in with Girlfriend during divorce

Hi Guys,

Have reached the point in my divorce where my wife and I have agreed a "Settlement figure" and the divorce is proceeding amicably.

However, my girlfriend and I want to live together and my solicitor is concerned that this may seriously rock the boat.

I am therefore asking what experienc people have had of this, should we go for it as I don't want my wife controlling my life any more than she already has or is there a possibility that she could be entitled to or want a different settlement?

Any comments or advice would be appreciated as I really am struggling to make the right call.

I have no experience of this, but if you move in with your gf it may seem your housing needs are sorted so you might end up with less. It might also upset your wife so that she decides to be more demanding.

Personally I think it would be better if you waited until your divorce was sorted.

I agree with your solicitor - it's safer to not rock the boat and get the finances finalized plus arrangements for any children established before moving in with someone. Moving in won't usually make that much difference to the actual settlement, but all too often it complicates and prolongs matters with the potential of increasing costs significantly and damaging relationships more than necessary.

Im living with my boyfriend who is separeted with his wife (waitnig till 2 years separeted).
We started live together after 9 month his separation.
But may be it's a different, because wife knows this and it's didn't effect as anyhow for 8 month living together.

On filling out forms for consent order/finances, there is a question about cohabitation and whether you are currently or plan to do so in the near future.

This question if answered yes could result in the judge believing that your housing needs are met and that you will be spending less than someone living alone (either raising children or not). This could easily go against you in the allocation of the finances. You would not NEED to spend so much money per month as you are sharing bills. Your ex on the other hand would be spending more on rent/bills because she is alone, the extra from your pay packet may be what was needed by her to balance the situation.

You not moving in with your girlfriend has nothing to do with your ex wife controlling your life and more to do with you controlling the amount of money that leaves your pockets.
