Hi Hamilton,
1. Nowhere near ready for settlement - my wife has
refused to go back to work, and has taken on £10k debt to go on a full-time
course for a job she has almost no hope of getting (she's doing an LPC,
which is the final stage of education prior to seeking a training contract
as a solicitor, but with a 2:2 degree and almost no work experience, she
has basically no hope as there is an excess of applicants, and most firms
won't even look at a CV with "2:2" on it). Even if she did succeed, trainee
solicitors get very low wages for a couple of
years and she could not possibly afford the mortgage plus loan repayments,
but she still refuses to sell the house and get something more modest
(she's massively over-housed). Basically, she's sitting pretty and in no
hurry to do anything about it as long as muggins keeps paying!
2. House is in joint names
3. Paying 20% salary as maintenance
for my two daughters
4. Wife's partner lives there permanently,
has a salary. Wife says he doesn't earn enough either to buy me out of the
house or to pay the monthly mortgage. At one stage she did say he could
afford half the mortgage, but that he would be paying my half, not hers,
and would therefore have a beneficial interest in the house at my
expense.
5. Repayment mortgage - Halifax said they wouldn't
allow me to go interest-only
6. Haven't asked about a payment
holiday - but I'll give it a go.
