My ex husband has recently been diagnosed with a progressive illness. We
divorced 3 years ago and spousal and
child maintenance has been agreed through the courts.
He has asked to reduce his payments to me by a third, not becasue he is in
financial straits, but because his businesses are not performing.
Whilst I am sympathetic to his situation, he is still able to work and
will probably continue to do so for some time, possibly for 10 years +. He
leads a lavish lifestyle and has a trust fund.
I am 50 and
looking after out 10 year old son and work on a self employed basis to
supplement maintenance payments. I have been unable to get a job
locally.
I was awarded the proceeds of the marital home and have
enough money in the bank to support me for a few years.
I am
reluctant to agree with the reduction in maintenance without it being
agreed and amended by the court.
He doesn't want to go through
the courts and I am told that it could be very expensive to settle, as we
will have to go through a similar financial process as we did when we got
divorced.
I have asked to see his bank statements which he
refuses to share with me. What should I do?
