Annulment question.

For a none wiki.

Guy and girl marry in England, marriage not consummated, guy leaves and goes home to his home country.

Two years later girl asks a solicitor what to do sol says annul the marriage.

The girl knows which country the guy lives in but no more no contact ect.

The girl gets a bill from the sol for 1k and told a hearing will be needed so more cost.

So her questions

Is more than one hearing needed

Can anyone guess what it will cost to annul

Is divorce a better option ie cheaper or quicker or both

The shariah element already granted.

More than one hearing? If the other party is not in the country and is incommunicado, it is likely that there will be several hearings.

Cost? Think of a number and triple it. I would guess at £4k and 18 months or more if the respondent is difficult/impossible to trace.

Divorce quicker and cheaper? Yes although still not 'cheap' and not 'quick' if the other side has done a bunk.

here's a thought . .

Dump the first solicitor and find a natural disaster that occurred about the time of the husband's disappearance.

Go to another solicitor and ask about the legality of your marriage seeing as it hasn't been consumated and is it true that after 7 years of fruitless searching your husband will be declared dead and you become a widow.

Please note the above method does not protect a spouse from bigamy (where it is illegal).

Please also note that the estate of the deceased may contain liabilities as well as assets.

The other thing to bear in mind is if the marriage hasn't been consummated it is a 'voidable' and valid up to the decree of annulment so the finances are treated in the same way as divorce.
