Re:Paying Divorce Costs

I was the respondent in my divorce. My ex did not apply for the decree absolute forcing me to. We had the hearing and divorce was granted as there was no reason why it shouldnt be.

My ex was on legal aid. I am now being chased by her solictors to pay a percentage of the divorce costs

Originally they said it was £700 + VAt, then they reduced it to £447 + VAT.

I was divorced under the grounds of adultary. They have said it is this cost as my ex neeeded a lot of time and attention.

Is this a reasonable amount to expect to pay? I have offered £300 + VAT but they have turned it down.

You say they are seeking "a percentage of the divorce costs". Would this be 50%? If so, it is worthwhile as going to court on this will end up with you paying 100% of the costs.

Generally speaking, an undefended divorce takes around 4.5 hours of time at whatever the solicitor's hourly rate is. An average rate is £175 which would be £787.50 + VAT + court fees.

Your ex may be exempt from paying court fees but you still have the solicitor's costs to pay. £447.00 + VAT seems more than reasonable to me.
