If you want TOTAL escapism and you love history try Company of Liars - Karen Maitland. TOTALLY ABSORBING - forgot ex, food, sleep even kids lol!!! Set in 14th century England it keeps you guessing till the end! So many twists and turns and the best bit is we think we had a lousy summer lol!!!! TRY IT !

I read this book last year, and thought it was fab too. Her other book, The Owl Killers is out in paperback too. Also look out for the latest in the Medieval Murderers books (The Sacred Stone), as she has written a chapter in that too.

The Medieval Murderers books are a good way to be introduced to authors you havent read before.

Each writer writes a novella, set in their time of history. With a continuous theme or thread of a story line running through each novella, it builds up into a complete novel.

Try Susanna Gregory's novels, set in 14th Centenary Cambridge - the first one is called "A Plague on Both Your Houses" her website is a little out of date, but should give you an idea of what to expect from her books

I will try the Medieval Murders sounds right up my street! Haven't heard of Susanna Gregory but she sounds interesting too! Have you tried Diana Gabaldon's series that starts with Crosstitch? They are historical - set in the 18th century mainly in Scotland, France and America- but they also involve time travel. To be honest the first 4 were AWESOME! Probably the best books I have ever read. She is now on book 7 the last and I am getting very very confused! Her characters and plots are so complicated; after book 3 she did a companion to the series to help poor bemused nits like me catch up! Having said that if you have a good memory they are fascinating!!!!!! Insignificant events in book 1 really come back in a BIG way in book 3 and so on!!! Sorry to ramble! hope this makes sense :0)
